WHAT ARE OTHER PEOPLE LIKE WHEN THEY ARE THEMSELVES

(3-part live situation, JUNE 2016)

What Are Other People Like When They Are Themselves is a live 3-part situation that recreates the encounter group therapy session of the docu-film, Journey Into Self , through improvisation and rehearsal.

Part1 – Artist (acting as invigilator) hands out an audio guide to people as they enter the gallery, which contains an audio improvisation session (read by artist). Each audio guide is specific to one of the characters from Read Through (the transcript of Journey Into Self ). Using the age and gender of the character as a guide, each participant is asked to create imagined backgrounds to build up a foundation for that character. The participant is then instructed to move to Part2

Part2 – On entering Part2 (five chairs in a marked-out square) each participant looks for the corresponding script, which marries up with the part they were assigned and worked on in Part1. The participant(s) then perform a number of scenes from a further edited version of the Read Through script. The artist, who has also been assigned a role – the therapy group facilitator – performs with the participant(s). The performance ends and the participant(s) are encouraged by the artist to talk about their experience of Parts1 and 2.

Part3 – An edited re-work of Journey Into Self,  now mirroring the script of Part2, is shown on loop, dubbed with the voices collected from the previous live situations of Paid Opportinity and  Part2.
